"For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." Galations 6:8
This time of year prompts such a mix of emotions. There is a feeling of cheer and good will in the air, but it is hopelessly mixed together with a hubbub of commercialism and greed. There are nativity scenes right next to Santas in lawn displays. We often hear: “Christ is the reason for the Season”, coupled with: “Keep Christ in Christmas”.
Employees in the workplace are told they cannot say, “Merry Christmas” to customers, but must instead say: “Happy Holidays” because there are those who wish to silence any Christian sentiment – particularly relative to this time of year. After all it might “offend” someone. Some people stand in opposition to this command - boldly and defiantly saying: “Merry Christmas”, even when they know it might cost them their jobs. They are standing for their first amendment right to honor their faith and choose their own words of well-wishing. Ironically, we do get somewhat offended when we are wished a “Merry Christmas”, though it is not for the usual reason, and we do appreciate the intent of the sentiment. We certainly have no desire to stifle anyone’s right to speak their minds and hearts with such well-wishing, but we bristle at the phrase “Merry Christmas” because of what we now know about the roots of that particular day. It makes us wonder what Christ really thinks about “Christmas”! Does anyone out there share in these sentiments? We’d like to hear from you, pro or con. Let’s get this blog a-rollin’! In the meantime, if you’d like to see what all we have learned about this day, please tap into our featured article for the “But Why” series that is just beginning. The title of the article is “Some People Don’t Celebrate Christmas … But Why???”. It is lengthier than we had hoped, but there was a lot to cover on this topic! We believe you will find it well worth the read.
